September Colour Inspiration
Share
September is one of my favourite times of year for colour. Summer hasn't quite disappeared, but there is a noticeable change in the light, the evenings start to draw in and the first hints of autumn begin to appear. The colours outside slowly become warmer and more muted, making September a lovely time to refresh your home too.
Rather than making a dramatic change for autumn, September is a good opportunity to introduce a few warmer shades while keeping some of the lighter colours that have worked throughout summer. Think soft greens, warm neutrals, faded blues, earthy browns, muted terracotta and touches of golden yellow.
These colours work particularly well for living rooms, bedrooms and other spaces where you want your home to feel comfortable without becoming too dark or heavy.
A September Colour Palette Inspired by the Season
A September colour palette doesn't have to mean the traditional autumn combination of deep orange, red and brown. This early part of autumn is much softer, with a mixture of summer and autumn colours working together.
Some of the shades I keep coming back to for September are:
Soft sage green brings a natural, calming feel.
Warm cream and oat keep the palette light and fresh.
Muted terracotta adds a little warmth.
Faded blue brings in some of the feeling of summer.
Warm brown adds depth and connects the colours together.
Together, these shades create an autumn colour palette that feels relaxed rather than overly seasonal. They can work just as well in a neutral home as they can in a room that already has plenty of colour.
Calm, warm and natural.
Soft, relaxed and slightly coastal.
Warm, sunny and earthy.
Natural, grounded and cosy.
Soft Sage Green
Sage green is one of those colours that works throughout the year, but it feels particularly right as we move into September. It brings a natural quality to a room and works beautifully with warm whites, beige, cream and natural wood.
For a simple September home decor update, try introducing sage through cushions, throws, ceramics or smaller accessories rather than changing everything at once.
Sage also works really well with botanical artwork, landscape prints and nature inspired wall art. A print containing different shades of green can help bring the colour into the room without making it feel too coordinated.
Warm Cream and Natural Neutrals
Warm neutrals are perfect for creating a comfortable home as the seasons change. Cream, oatmeal, stone and soft beige can make a room feel warmer without losing the brightness that works so well during the summer months.
If your home already has neutral walls, you don't need to repaint to create a new autumn look. Adding texture can make just as much difference. Think knitted cushions, linen, woven baskets, natural wood and soft furnishings in slightly warmer shades.
Wall art is another easy way to introduce colour. A landscape or coastal print with warm neutral tones can sit comfortably within a neutral room while still adding some interest to the walls.
Muted Terracotta
Terracotta is a great colour for September because it brings warmth without feeling too obviously autumnal. A softer, slightly faded terracotta works particularly well with cream, beige, olive green and warm brown.
You don't need much of it either. A terracotta cushion, vase or piece of artwork can be enough to add warmth to a neutral room.
It's also a natural fit for travel inspired interiors. Terracotta walls, tiled roofs, sunny streets and Mediterranean landscapes are full of these warm earthy shades, so adding the colour to your home can bring back some of that holiday feeling.
Faded Blue for a Hint of Summer
September doesn't mean you have to say goodbye to blue. In fact, softer shades of blue work particularly well alongside the warmer colours of early autumn.
Try pairing faded blue with cream and warm beige, then add a little terracotta or brown for contrast. The result feels relaxed and balanced rather than overly cool.
Blue is also an easy way to keep some of that coastal feeling in your home as summer comes to an end. Coastal wall art, sea views and landscape photography can all work beautifully with this type of colour scheme.
Warm Browns and Earthy Shades
As autumn gets closer, earthy colours naturally start appearing everywhere. Brown doesn't have to mean dark or traditional, though. Lighter shades such as warm tan, caramel, mushroom and soft brown can add depth without making a room feel gloomy.
These colours work particularly well alongside green and cream, creating a natural palette that feels cosy but still fresh.
If you're looking for an easy autumn home decor idea, adding a few earthy tones through artwork, cushions, blankets and accessories can make a noticeable difference without requiring a complete room makeover.
How to Use a September Colour Palette at Home
The easiest way to introduce a new colour palette is to start with one or two shades you already like. You don't need every colour in the palette to appear equally throughout the room.
Choose one main colour, add one or two supporting shades and then use smaller touches of another colour to bring everything together.
For example, a living room could use warm cream as the main colour, sage green through soft furnishings and muted terracotta in smaller accessories. Add natural wood and a landscape or travel inspired print and you have a relaxed September look without making the room feel overly themed.
September Wall Art Ideas
Changing your wall art is another simple way to update a room for the season. You don't necessarily need to replace everything. Sometimes one new print can change the feel of an entire wall.
For September, look for artwork featuring softer greens, warm neutrals, faded blues, earthy tones and muted autumn colours. Landscapes, botanical artwork, coastal scenes and travel inspired prints can all work well with these colours.
You can also use artwork as the starting point for your colour scheme. Pick out two or three colours from a favourite print and repeat those shades elsewhere in the room through cushions, throws, accessories or flowers.
This is one of the easiest ways to create a room that feels coordinated without everything looking like it was bought as a matching set.
Creating a Softer Autumn Look
One of the things I like most about September is that it doesn't feel fully autumnal yet. There is still plenty of light and colour around, so the best September colour palettes tend to sit somewhere between summer and autumn.
Instead of going straight for dark greens, deep reds and strong oranges, try softer versions of those colours. Sage instead of forest green, muted terracotta instead of bright orange and warm cream instead of stark white.
The result is a home that feels warmer and more inviting while still keeping some of that lighter summer feeling.
Find Your September Colours
At Poster Wall, colour is a big part of the artwork we create and collect. Our prints are inspired by travel, photography, landscapes, nature, coastal scenes and the places and moments that catch our eye.
Many of our designs have a soft, watercolour inspired appearance, making them an easy way to introduce colour and personality to your walls without overwhelming a room.
Whether you're drawn to soft coastal blues, natural greens, warm earthy shades or the changing colours of autumn, your wall art can be a simple starting point for the rest of your room.
September is a good reminder that updating your home doesn't have to mean starting again. Sometimes a new colour combination, a few small changes and a print you really love are enough to make a space feel different.
And as the colours outside begin to change, it's a lovely time to take inspiration from them.
